What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a covering that covers an existing tooth. People often refer to them as caps. It aesthetically improves the way a broken or heavily decayed tooth appears.
A crown also is much stronger and lasts longer than a plastic restoration.
Crowns can be made of precious metals like gold, porcelain or the latest style Zirconia.
Do you need a crown?
Dental crowns can be used to cover a severely broken or decayed tooth when too much of the original tooth is missing.
This may include:
- After root canal treatment to reinforce the the tooth
- Protecting a weak tooth that has been heavily restored in the past
- A significant part of a tooth is broken and not being a candidate for a plastic restoration.
What is the process of a crown?
- A dentist assesses if you require a crown
- Your tooth is anaesthetised
- The tooth is prepared for a crown
- A shade/ colour is selected for your new crown
- A 3D scan is taken of your tooth and bite
- We make a temporary crown for you while your new crown is being made
- Your scan I sent to our Lab technician to make your new crown (usually takes 2 weeks)
- 2 weeks after your initial appointment we insert your new crown.

A bridge permanently replaces missing teeth with a false tooth. The bridge is attached to teeth on either side to the missing tooth/ gap and is not removable.
A bridge is a great alternative to costly implants or removable dentures.

What are Porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are a thin shell of tooth coloured porcelain that is glued to the front surfaces of teeth to improve their appearance.
They are permanently glued to your teeth and can come in different shades and styles.

- Your practitioner will help you decide the colours and shapes of your future veneers
- Your teeth that will be prepared are anaesthetised
- Depending on the case your teeth are prepared for veneers
- A 3D scan is taken of your teeth and bite
