Options to straighten teeth

There is a lot to consider when deciding which orthodontic treatment is best for you. Lucky you are not alone in the process. A professional orthodontist will be able to consult you to deciding the best option for your individual situation. There are pros and cons to each orthodontic treatment method, but by working together you will be ensured to make the best decision for each individual situation.

Traditional braces use a set of stainless steel brackets and are attached to the teeth using cement. The brackets are connected by a wire to help apply pressure to the teeth to align into position. Braces have been the most traditional and common form of orthodontic treatment in the past.

Orthodontics has advanced in the last few decades, now with other less visible options to the metal bracket traditional braces. The following treatment options are much more discreet in appearance.

Ceramic braces much like traditional braces, use metal brackets and wire to align teeth. However, ceramic braces are less visible in the mouth as they are made from a clear material as opposed to metal. While they do help with the appearance of braces, the clear material can become discoloured depending on the types of food and drink you have whilst they are on.

Similar to traditional braces, lingual braces use the same metal bracket and wire structure to help align teeth. The difference is the brackets and wire are placed behind the teeth, so they are not visible from the surface. While lingual braces are a great option for those worried about the appearance of traditional braces, they can impact speech because of the placement of the brackets on the tongue side of the mouth.

Invisalign is one of the newest orthodontic treatments that is now available on the market. Custom made clear trays are worn up to 20 hours a day to align teeth into position. Trays are swapped every two weeks to move teeth slightly further each time. Invisalign can achieve similar if not the same results as braces, although it can take longer for the treatment to be effective.
