How often should I get a checkup

The rule of thumb in general dentistry is that you have get a dental check up and clean every 6 months. Many dental problems and conditions can be easily prevented if caught early but only a dentist is able to accurately diagnose these with a proper examination.

If your dentist considers you to be of higher risk of tooth decay, getting a checkup more frequently, like every 3 months, is recommended. On the other hand, if you practice excellent oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and flossing once a day, and your dentist has not found any cavities or gum disease, 12-monthly dentist visits would also be sufficient.

A dental hygienist is the most appropriate person to see for you 6 month clean as they specialise in cleaning and polishing teeth and focus on maintaining optimal gum health. They will work closely with your dentist to ensure you receive the best possible service and can be confident that your teeth are well looked after.
